How much mushrooms can help you defend cancer and diabetes?

There are numerous ways mushrooms can be eaten – you can grill them, saute, bake, stir-fry, or make mushroom curry. Mushrooms are not only delicious but are also full of nutritional benefits.

Why should you eat mushrooms?

You will be surprised to learn that mushrooms are very rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The antioxidant properties in mushrooms come with selenium, vitamin C, and choline, which are proven elements to eliminate free radicals or toxins of metabolism and other body processes. The Choline element in mushrooms helps in the movement of muscles and maintains the structure of cellular membranes and memory. Minerals in mushrooms include copper, iron, potassium, and phosphorus.

When the mushrooms are exposed to sunlight, it makes them a natural source of vitamin D2, which is turned into an active form of vitamin D in the human body. It needs to absorb calcium for healthy bones in our body.

As there is a wide variety of mushrooms, the one most commonly cooked and eaten in our country is white, or button mushroom, and this superfood can help in tackling specific health conditions. It is even proved through various researches.

Cancer

A study in 2018 in the journal Oncotarget discussed using medicinal mushrooms for future cancer therapy owing to anti-cancer properties in it. Mushroom’s antioxidant compounds like polysaccharides, polyphenols, glutathione, ergothioneine, and selenium are well-known to be behind its cancer-fighting ability. A separate study in the journal 3 Biotech explains that mushrooms are known to complement chemotherapy and radiation therapy by countering the ill effects of cancer, such as nausea, bone marrow suppression, anemia, and lowered resistance in the body.

Diabetes

Several types of research have shown that mushrooms are very low in carbs and sugar and are a good source of bioactive compounds that natural and anti-diabetic. These anti-diabetic compounds help us prevent gestational diabetes or type 2 diabetes. The dietary fiber in mushrooms can help decrease the blood sugar level in the human body.

Heart health

There is a naturally occurring amino acid named ergothioneine in mushrooms and beta-glucan, which is a soluble fiber. These two compounds can reduce the risk of heart diseases in our body. The compounds are well known to lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels, which are directly linked to these kind of diseases. The ergothioneine compound also inhibits arterial plaque development, which could otherwise lead to high blood pressure and stroke.

Immunity

Many studies show that mushrooms boost immunity in our body as they are rich in vitamins and essential amino acids.
